JAKARTA (TimesofIDN) – Indonesia will be the first country permitted to purchase land in Saudi Arabia to support the development of a hajj village in Mecca, according to Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Perkasa Roeslani.
This policy follows a change in Saudi Arabia’s land ownership regulations in Mecca, prompted by a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).
Rosan explained that the allocated land for the hajj village is strategically located.
“The land for the hajj village is very close, with some plots directly adjacent to the Mecca area. There are eight plots attached to it, and others within a one-kilometer radius,” Rosan said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta, as reported by Media Indonesia on Wednesday (30/7).
He noted that Saudi Arabia’s amended law now allows foreign entities to own land in Mecca, a change driven by the discussions between President Prabowo and MBS.
While the exact timeline for the construction of the hajj village remains unclear, Rosan stated that the legal framework for foreign land ownership in Mecca will take effect in January 2026.
“I was informed that the amended law will be effective in January, allowing foreign institutions to own land in Mecca with full ownership rights,” he clarified.
Rosan emphasized that his ministry will closely monitor the development process and maintain coordination with Saudi authorities.
“This process is already underway and serves as tangible proof that what the President has envisioned can, God willing, be realized,” he concluded.
